Forms of questioning

·        Initiation/Response/Feedback (IRF):
  • Initiation: teacher asks question
  • Response: Students raise hands, one student is selected to answer
  • Feedback: the teacher comments on the answer
  • Only 1 or 2 students are involved.

·         Exploratory talk:
  • Students form groups
  • Discuss topic
  • Arrive at a response
  • Each group presents their response to the class
  • Much more effective way of promoting talking, listening and thinking
