Using oral language
Forms of questioning
· Initiation/Response/Feedback
(IRF):
- Initiation: teacher asks question
- Response: Students raise hands, one student is selected to answer
- Feedback: the teacher comments on the answer
- Only 1 or 2 students are involved.
·
Exploratory
talk:
- Students form groups
- Discuss topic
- Arrive at a response
- Each group presents their response to the class
- Much more effective way of promoting talking, listening and thinking
